The word coming out of the MSN today is that the Ft. Hood shooter was attending the same mosque as the 9/11 hijackers in 2001.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan apparently attended the same Virginia mosque as two Sept. 11 hijackers in 2001, at a time when a radical imam preached there. Whether Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, associated with the hijackers is something the FBI will probably look into, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
[UPDATE with clarification]: While the news media is calling this an extreme mosque (and one the 9/11 hijacks have history with), it is one of the largest mosques on the East Coast, with thousands of parishioners.
Senator Joe Lieberman has asked for a special investigation to determine whether the attack was a terrorist attack. Personally I'm confused about that...of COURSE it terrorism...people were terrified. Discovering the motive behind the terror (if any other than insanity) is the job of the military and the FBI, not a political organization.
AOL (linked above) is reporting several concerning facts that, while they don not discredit a "lone crazy" theory, do seem to indicate a "lone crazy extremist."
Classmates participating in a 2007-2008 master's program at a military college complained repeatedly to superiors about what they considered Hasan's anti-American views.... Hasan gave a presentation at the Uniformed Services University that justified suicide bombing and told classmates that Islamic law trumped the U.S. Constitution.
Another classmate said he complained to five officers and two civilian faculty members at the university. He wrote in a command climate survey sent to Pentagon officials that fear in the military of being seen as politically incorrect prevented an "intellectually honest discussion of Islamic ideology" in the ranks.
/*UPDATE
Sorry I was too fast hitting the submit button
What the article fails to mention until AFTER several full-screen ads is that the Mosque in question only "may have" been attended by Hasan. And of course, it is one of the largest Mosques on the East Coast -- it has thousands of parishioners.
Officials at Ft. Hood have found no evidence that he was in any way linked with extremists.
This slow leaking of rumors and dribs and drags of information is unhealthy for people. It causes fear and worry where not is warranted.
[UPDATE: Removed incorrect statement about lack of violence after 9/11]
