For now, anyway.
My dad, and I were discussing the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) today, and after reading the Re-douche-agains comments in the choice is yours' diary that's currently on the Rec List, I have come to the conclusion that we should let them vote it down.
Since we already know where the Opposition Party stands, we should let the bill fail. Hear me out on this.
We have been spoon-fed the idea of bi-partisanship, as the reason for all the concessions that are being made in this piece of legislation, only to have the other side vote against it in the House, and more or less threaten to do the same in the Senate.
I know that something must be done to kick-start the economy again, and the longer we wait to get something done, the worse it is going to get, but I don't see it happening in the immediate future, unless the "tax cuts for the wealthy" crowd gets exactly what they want, which, in the end will only hurt the country even more.
Now, as it stands, we are just short of a filibuster proof majority, but once Senator Franken is sworn in (hopefully during this session of Congress) we are that much closer, even if Gregg, doesn't accept the Commerce appointment, there has to be at least one moderate Republican that we can sway into voting for what is right. By letting the current bill fail, the President, and/or the Congressional Dems could re-introduce the original, or even better, legislation and get it passed, without having to concede, or at least make minimal concessions to the Obstructionists.
It may not be the best idea, or even a good one, but, the effort being put into building bridges instead of burning them has gotten us nowhere. And, since the other side would rather take the ball and go home, I say we show them exactly whose ball it is.
