CNN has finally posted a long overdue STORY to report on what so many of us Kossacks knew for quite some time. I am not Blockquoting from the CNN story, but it is a short read. I encourage you to read some of the Past Kos Diaries which include contacts for aid.
The gist of the story is that Communities surrounding and including Emmonak are suffering for lack of fuel and food in a dark land of negative temperatures and $22.00 a Dozen for Eggs, $10.00 gallon of milk, and a $50.00 fuel expense to make the 90 minute ride (one way) to the store for some of the communities surrounding Emmonak.
Gryphenwrote THISabout a month ago. And before that there were SEVERAL OTHER diaries about the life and death struggles Emmonak
Here is a quote from Peacearena's Diary:
She also says she needs posterboard for her class asap. It will take too long to get it through the school channels, too late for the Science Fair. So posterboard, markers, and anything related to make science projects can be sent her, as well as $ donations, boxes of food, etc. to
Fannie Bates
Emmonak Public School
100 School Drive
Emmonak, Alaska 99581
She didn't suggest this, but I would send donations for fuel and food to her directly. She is a long time progressive community organizer and folks in need will get it a lot sooner and with less red tape and grief if she's in charge of it.
Droogie66655 sent out the challenge with a diary titled
Can 'bored, pathetic bloggers' respond to a disaster better than Palin?
This was a hot topic in Mid January, but the need is as great now, if not greater than then. Tristan57 was the first I know of to alert Daily Kos and others in the Blogosphere and MSNBC.
From Tristan57's Diary:
I sent my diary yesterday to Rachel Maddow and Huff Post ran the story front page. Rachel is reportedly doing something on it tonight and it's going to be a huge success for anonymous bloggerdom.
Please read the past diaries, look at the pictures, checkout the Poll results... I know this is a tough time for all, but are we doing our all?
I am writing this as my battery dies on my laptop, I hope soon to find an outlet. (I am in the Albany NY train station sipping a beer, no outlets inside the Alcohol zone). At a time when things are tough all over, I can be especially tough or those that live on the fringes of civilization. Fishing has been down, the river froze two months early, inflation has run amok on the necessities, there are no niceties. It is subsistence living for thousands in a small (for Alaska) area. Thanks or letting me post this, Kos. We have a truly inspiring community here, thanks first to you, then to all who contribute as they can.
Peace. Hope. Integrity.
I meant to post this yesterday, but my computer died as in DEAD. I am using my replacement laptop to add this last line.
