I came across this image while surfing the web today, and I thought it was a cute way to make an important point:
The massive amount of funding cut from education and school repair in the Senate's version of the stimulus bill is an absolute travesty. Kids like "Lil' Bobby" deserve better from this government. I don't know that I expect to see education funds increased during the joint committee process, but we desperately need to focus on such issues moving forward. Our schools are falling apart, our class sizes are too large, and there is simply no excuse for denying the necessary funds to children.
I live in South Carolina. In my state, we have what's known as "The Corridor of Shame." This corridor is located along I-95, and has some of the worst conditions in the country (you can view the full hour long documentary here). We're talking about teachers desks sitting on cinder blocks, and students without books crammed into overstuffed class rooms. There is no way to create the economy of the future when we are providing our children with these types of resources.
Even if education gets the shaft in this stimulus bill, we need to be prepared to fight for a separate bill to address the egregious inequalities in the public school system.
