Out of all the news stories I watched and read yesterday, the one I fell asleep thinking about was homeless cancer survivor Henrietta Hughes, calmly and sincerely asking our President for help at the Fort Myers town hall.
From CNN:
"I have an urgent need, unemployment and homelessness, a very small vehicle for my family and I to live in," Hughes told Obama at a town hall rally in Fort Myers, Florida, as he pushed for passage of his stimulus plan in the Senate. "The housing authority has two years waiting lists, and we need something more than the vehicle and the parks to go to. We need our own kitchen and our own bathroom. Please help."
"Please help" -- the two words that shone a light on our housing and unemployment crisis like even Paul Krugman never could.
Less than 24 hours later, the help has come. And while an inspired nation reveals its compassion, Michelle Malkin and her cronies want you to think Henrietta Hughes is a crybaby bed-wetter.
A Florida state legislator -- a Republican -- has offered Henrietta a home. A website has already been set up to call greater attention to the homelessness problem. A state citizen wants to send $50 a month to Ms. Hughes. For the moment, Henrietta Hughes has a little hope -- earned the hard way after living for nearly a year in a small pick-up truck.
And Malkin? From TownHall:
If she had more time, she probably would have remembered to ask Obama to fill up her gas tank, too.
Classy. And if you dare to read some of the more hateful comments, you can do so here. Hand-outs. Free ride. Socialism. And that's just the start.
People who can, helping people in need. I never would have thought there was any room for cynicism in something so simple and so human.
