Why not cut $100 billion to $200 billion per year from the US military in supporting bases and other activities in Germany, Italy, Korea and Japan, etc. and increase the Stimulus for US Jobs?
Our wars in these places were over 50 years ago. The cold war is over. Japan, Germany and Korea have recovered from these wars of the past.
I suspect that even the least effective stimulus project in the US has a better return on US jobs and our economy than spending on US military bases in other countries.
I am not proposing that we close all or even most of these foreign bases in this diary - just a major reduction in spending on these.
We don't need more military bases in the US, in my view, but that is not my central point.
If having those bases are critical to these regions then the governments in those areas should provide the funding.
I did not bring up Iraq, Afghanistan and other hot spots as that part of our military spending is well covered here.
I am concerned about our unnecessary spending on the cold spots!
