Last month President Obama nominated Congresswoman Hilda Solis to be our next Secretary of Labor, but conservative Republicans are blocking her confirmation simply because she supports working people.
Andy Stern, President of the Service Employees International Union, just recorded a short video message about this unacceptable obstruction and how you can help. Watch it:
Please take a minute to watch the video, then sign this petition to the Senate supporting Congresswoman Solis for Secretary of Labor.
Our economy is in dire straits. Today it was announced that just last month we lost 598,000 more jobs – 3.5 million since the beginning of the recession. Workers desperately need the Senate to pass the Economic Recovery bill and appoint a strong Secretary of Labor.
Congresswoman Hilda Solis is the embodiment of the American Dream. She is the daughter of immigrant union members and spent her life fighting for the middle class.
Hilda Solis is the right choice for Secretary because she understands personally the challenges workers face in a global economy and the need for a bold new agenda that puts the needs of working Americans ahead of the needs of big corporations.
Instead of pitching in and playing a serious role in moving our nation forward, the conservative Republicans in Congress have decided to be obstructionist.
That conservative Republicans are choosing to obstruct her nomination is an insult to every working person in America.
The conservatives who are complaining about Congresswoman Solis are the very same group who spent the last eight years putting the needs of big corporations over the needs of working Americans. The same group that fought for hundreds of billions in special tax breaks for banks and big corporations, that fought to keep billions in tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas, are trying to stop the confirmation of an advocate for working people in our government.
Enough is enough. It's time to stop the obstruction and confirm Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor. Sign the petition.
