As a Christian who is PERSONALLY conservative, but socially very liberal (just because I do not engage in stuff personally does not mean you shouldn't have the right to do it.) I am constantly appalled by the pro-life movement.
Bear with me, I have not written here much, and hope I do everything right.
I was reading a MSN article about the stem-cell research ban being lifted and I came across this little nugget.
In patients with diabetes, for example, transplanting insulin-producing beta cells can be done with adult stem cells. But this requires 40 pancreases to harvest enough cells for one diabetic patient. In contrast, says Reijo Pera, using embryonic stem cells for the same procedure produces "bucket loads of the cells, and you don't need a cadaver."
Please correct me, I may not be reading that right, but we have to get the adult stem-cells to fight diabetes from cadavers? But the wingnuts have a problem with taking the embryos that are going to be flushed down the drain??!!?? Are not embryos that have been rejected and abandoned pretty much a mini-cadaver anyway. There is NOT ONE ounce of common sense to their position.
Of course, common sense has never mattered in reasoning on a issue viewed as 'Religious'. But when you have to talk to one of these people you can (always try at least) to mention the following.
1.) While there are movements to 'adopt' unused embryos, the pro-life movment has VERY LITTLE to NO objection to creating these embryos in the first place, even knowing that many will be thrown away.
2.) There is no angst when these embroys are routinetly thrown away.
3.) Most would have no problem with harvesting cells off of cadavers to heal major illnesses.
So why do they have a problem with harvesting the cells off these 'discarded cadaverous embryos' to help GIVE LIFE to actual living-breathing human beings.
