As usual, I'm not disappointed with Republicans acting like we've come to expect, but instead I don't understand the "MSM" and Democratic response. We are being told that the "best" need to be rewarded handsomely, even when they fail miserably (which, of course, would require that we examine exactly what such people mean by the word "best"). We are being told that the "best" need to be paid more money in one year (or perhaps one month) than the "normal" American would need in a lifetime. Why? They used to talk about Adam Smith a lot, but now it's Ayn Rand (probably because Smith's writings are actually more nuanced than they can tolerate).
Obviously, many of us think Ayn Rand was just foolish and unrealistic, and that her written work should not be viewed as some sort of bible of social organization, but let's just consider what could happen, if her simplistic world view were to be taken to its logical conclusion. Before the "best" get disgusted and move to an uninhabited island, those who work 40 or more hours a week, with no more than 2 weeks of vacation, no health insurance, and no ability to save any money, decide to stop working until they get the same kinds of social services that the rest of the modern, democratic nations have provided their hardworking citizens.
The "best" are outraged ! They want to leave the USA. Unfortunately, the hard working people have gone on strike. There is no way for the "best" to go anywhere, unless they want to fly their own jets out of the country, though without any help from people like air traffic controllers. Come to think of it, this may not be a bad idea after all ! Seriously, though, why is this point being missed by Democrats, who I don't see making a very good case against the Ayn Rand nonsense?
