The other day I walked into the Douglas County Election Board with several signatures of North Omaha voters who said they were proud to help launch my campaign for Omaha’s 2nd city council district.
I watched in horror as voter after voter was disqualified for various technicalities. Some had moved because of the harsh economy and not changed registration. Some signed by their nickname and not their legal first name. One-by-one, 20 law-abiding, tax-paying citizens of North Omaha had their voice taken from them in the democratic process. Only 94 signatures were allowed by the government, and I was told that I would not see my name on the ballot.
Are you kidding me? After the 2008 election I thought things were getting better for us! I thought that a young black man could expect at least some fairness in the process! Apparently I THOUGHT WRONG!
In the past, some might accept the verdict and move on with their lives. Not this time. I am standing up for Justice and Democracy by running a write-in campaign that flies in the face of the power brokers in Omaha. That is the only option I have and I refuse to stop until I have done everything that I can to grow the seed of change planted by Obama.
