I've been wary of eliminating the US Senate Filibuster rule because I really believe that sometimes the majority is out to lunch. President Bush and the Senate from 2001 to 2006 is a perfect example. It's the old age question of when your party is in power the filibuster really sucks and when your in the minority what a powerful tool to prevent abuse by the majority.
Why not put a time limit on a filibuster? A 10 day limit. If the majority's bill is so terrible the minority should be able to mount viable opposition to it within 10 days. With modern media technology the minority should be able involve the public and convince fellow Senators to vote their way. I'm not opposed to a 15 or 30 day hold. At some point enough is enough. The Republicans have abused their filibuster power and it's time to put and end to it.
From the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to The Fair Employment Practices Committee the filibuster has held this nation back from many progressive reforms and it need to be neutered. Keep in mind that this could be a real problem when and if the Democrats are no longer in the majority.
