My backyard chicks are growing up! If Easter hasn't inspired you to get your own chicks, these pix will!
Valkyrie, at the top of this pic, has long white wings and a cute tail! Last week we worried that she was the most frail and weak of the three. However, she's perked up nicely. She's a White Leghorn (like Foghorn Leghorn). So far she's mostly bright yellow with white wings and a white tail, and most like a stereotypical Easter chicken.
Irene, at the bottom, is the biggest of the three girls. She's a Buff Orpington, so she'll stay the same honey-gold color. Her wings and tail are still short and stubby.
Medea, a Silver Wyandotte, has wide but short wings, which are just starting to show the classic white-outlined black feathers.
They're still kept in the repurposed guinea pig cage with several incandescent light bulbs and a space heater to keep them warm. Some day they'll lay beautiful, free range, organic eggs. In the meantime, at 11 days old, they've learned all sorts of useful talents: how to knock over their feed dish, spill their water, and push their pine shaving bedding out of the cage and on to the hardwood floor. They're also quite talented at snoozing:
