I don't mean that as "We should be doing something to stop them!" I mean that as an honest yes/no question. Is pointing and laughing all we really need to do at this point?
They've spent the last few decades slicing-and-dicing the electorate, grabbing 50.1% here and 50.1% there, telling true believers what they wanted to hear, etc. And after all that, they exposed themselves to the country as not a party of ideas, but a party of cynical marketing strategies.
There have been many discussions on what the GOP can do to become politically viable again. But honestly, as much as I try to put aside my own partisan bias, I cannot in any way see that path for them. When the Democratic party was at low ebb, the reason was mainly bad politics, not bad policy. That doesn't help Republicans today.
It seems that the GOP has come to this same conclusion. With the upcoming teabag parties promoted by the various GOP organizations, and now with the inane declaration from Governor Perry, the next couple of days will be a lot of fun. They've decided that the only thing left is to go all in and stage some kind of corporate-sponsored revolution, and start a new political movement. And maybe try to fool libertarians into coming along for the ride.
The GOP has always been big on bluster and chest-thumping. And throwing giant hissy fits. So, after they're done crying and screaming and making complete asses of themselves, I'm guessing most of the rest of the country will still see that the Republicans have nothing good to offer.
I honestly see a small but real chance the Republican party is going to become irrelevant, or break up completely, within a generation -- something I would not have believed possible even a year ago. But how much of a disruption and danger will they be, in the meantime? And is there really a chance these staged freak shows are going to start bringing voters into their crazy tent?
Or is it okay to just point and laugh? Because that's what I really want to do.
