I had the misfortune to encounter the view that
Some Texans are arrogant and have got some backward thinking policies, but they're still Americans
We all know the legal definition of what an American is (well,
most of us outside Dixie know, anyway, though "birthers" apparently
exist in all 50 states). OK, not "all", but Texas (and Dixie in
general) clearly has some problems with this whole "equality" thing,
if you look at whom they graduate vs. whom they imprison.
America is not just a piece of land.
There are also American values and ideals, some of which actually
made it into the Constitution.
Wherefore I wound up getting hidden for insisting that conservative Texans are "Americans"
IN NAME ONLY.
They are not even worthy of the title.
They are ignorant and they are hateful.
This provoked the AMAZINGLY ignorant defense that conservative white
Texans included many
Americans who have fought and bled and died over the years for our nation.
And that, of course, simply had to be dismissed as an ignorant lie.
The American military has not been deployed in support of American values since WW2,
AND EVEN THEN, most of the southerners fighting against Hitler's attempt to empower a master race were STILL SUPPORTING SEGREGATION at home.
Black troops endured segregation while IN the Army,
and came back to face it at home in even MORE murderous ways.
Black servicemen who had survived Germany and Japan could sometimes did
NOT survive race-riots in the hometowns they returned to.
If the idiot I was arguing with wanted to know what white Texans have ACTUALLY been fighting for, he needed to READ A BOOK.
Of course, not all of it required overseas fighting;
white southerners did a perfectly good job of using force
domestically, both paramilitarily and under color of law:
