This is my first diary, detailing a brief encounter with a solo teabagger in Rockland County, NY. Be kind!
After reading some reports of the (wing)nuttiness going on yesterday, I drove up past a spot in Nanuet, NY where prior Anti-War and wingnut (Support the Troops!) protests have occurred. This normally happens by a small memorial at the Rt. 59 / Middletown Rd intersection.
It was around 6pm by the time I got there, and only one teabagger remained. No photos (forgot my camera), but it was a 60+ year old white guy wearing a sign with a message about his taxes getting raised on it. I managed to hit a red light directly in front of him, so I had some fun at his expense. He didn't understand it when I questioned how a person could teabag themselves, nor when I asked if he was a gymnast, as he must be very limber. The simple question of whether his taxes went down this year was ignored and responded to with yells about socialism. Sadly, the light changed then, and I had to bid our solo-teabagger adieu.
Now, I was curious if this guy was the only one who had shown up, so I found this article on LoHud that notes around 100 people made appearances there over the course of the day. The article correctly notes that FreedomWorks organized this, but the best snippet follows:
Richard Rich of Suffern said he felt government was taking on too much and should first focus on the economy before launching into health-care system updates and other areas.
"As a working taxpayer, I consider it just a big burden and I don't understand, like a lot of people, why government can't follow a budget like everyone else does," Rich said.
Yes, the guy's name is Richie Rich. You can't make this stuff up.
