Ryan Grim over at Huffington Post has an article about House Minority Leader Boehner's use of the term torture. In that article Boehner continues to echo the Republican and Right Wing mantra that releasing the torture memos would give valuable information to our enemies.
Boehner and his Republican colleagues simply don't get it.
Torture is illegal. The United States, by codified law, is not allowed to torture. If we are not allowed to torture, then making public the torture techniques illegally used by the Bush/Cheney Administration can not provide aid and assistance to our enemies. President Obama has publicly reaffirmed the long standing U.S. law and tradition that the United States will not torture - law and tradition that the Bush/Cheney Administration knowingly and willfully violated.
The Republicans are trying to muddle the real issue and to distract the American public from realizing that the Bush/Cheney Administration illegally authorized and used torture as an instrument of United States Policy - in direct violation of United States law. They are afraid, from a political point of view, that continued release of these memos will show the true extent that torture was authorized and used in the the Republican Bush/Cheney Administration.
