Prediction: Some time in the next couple of years, Barack Obama will enact some kind of draconian gun control law. For some strange reason, Gun violence won't decrease, so the response will be even more gun control. Gun violence will take a slight uptick. More and more people then demand even stricter gun control so then some opportunist polititian will come out and Declare a War on Guns. During this War on Guns, many people will be thrown in jail for mere Gun posession. Many non-violent offenders will have their lives ruined by mandatory minimums for gun posession. Many states who have legalized gun posession will have their state sovereignty infringed upon as gun dispenaries that are legal under state law, are raided by Federal Agents.
Many nations where the contraband guns come from will have their national sovereignty infringed upon as our Federal Government invades those countries to wipe out the gun smugglers. Alas, it will all be to no avail, as gun violence continues to run rampant through our inner cities. More teenagers will become gun owners than before the War on Guns even started. Finally, when the time comes, about 30 or 40 years from now, people will finally wake up and realize that the War on Guns is a failure. There will be a growing popular movement that demand gun legalization, And we will all be hearing chants that say "It's time to end the War on Guns"
Anyone who believes this scenario is impossible obviously hasn't learned their lesson from the War on Drugs.
I know that many liberals here would like to live in a peaceful and harmonious world without gun violence. A world where we could all just toss our guns away in a landfill, bury them, never to see the light of day again. And we could all have world peace and gather around a campfire and sing Kum-Bay-Ya. Believe me, I share that same dream.
The gun violence in this world is atrocious. I despise it just as much as any liberal. And as much of a Pro-Second Amendment advocate as I am, I bet it would surprise a bunch of people here to learn that I don't even own a gun and I don't want to own one any time soon. However, those who think that they can reduce or eliminate violence by simply passing gun prohibition laws are forgetting their history and their economics.
Most people here know all too well about the damage that the War on Drugs has caused. It's turned sick people into criminals. It's created violent drug cartels. It's put an overwhelming burden on the budgets of local law enforcement. And it's turned the United States into the country that imprisons more people than any other country on the planet. However, all of this damage was originally done by people with good intentions. Lots of mothers saw their rebellious teenagers ruin their health with Cocaine and LSD, and caught reerer madness when they caught their kids smoking pot. So they raised their voices and demanded the government do something about this rampant drug problem. So the government did something, and in this whole knee jerk reaction mentality, the government did precisely the wrong thing. They made drugs illegal. And then the problem really got out of control.
What people forget when they demand a ban of something they don't like, is a simple economic principle. When there is a demand for something then somebody will be willing and able to supply it. Back in the 20's, despite prohibition, there was still a demand for alcohol. And instead of it being supplied by your friendly neighborhood grocery store, it was supplied by the Al Capone's of the world. Nowadays, we have a similar situation with Marijuana. Instead of getting it from your local pot dispensary, Federal Prohibition is forcing us to get it from a shady dealer on the street corner. I promise you that If we go farther down the road of a gun ban, the same situation will arise. People want guns. As much as we would like to create a gun free world, It doesn't change the fact that people want guns. As crazy and irrational as some of those right-wing gun nuts may be, you can't deny the fact that People want Guns. And if gun ownership becomes illegal, some shady gun dealers are going to pop up all over the place and they are going to deliver to all those gun nuts all the guns they want. When you create a Black Market, goods and services always get delivered in the most dangerous way possible. When was the last time you saw two gun shop owners in an armed street fight with each other over territory?
If we ban guns, there will still be an ample supply of guns to go around. The only difference is, the only people who will have guns will be the people who are willing to break the law in order to get them. It effectively disarms law abiding citizens as criminals run loose as they always do.
I hope we have learned from history and come to realize that prohibition doesn't work. Whether it be for Alcohol, Marijuana, Prostitution, Gambling, or Guns. Prohibition has never worked and it never will. I hope there are some people here who understand this principle well enough to speak up now about this issue so they don't have to learn their lesson about prohibition in another 30 years. If anyone here agrees with me, please speak up now so you don't have to say this thirty years from now. It's time to end the War on Guns.
