I was watching Newt Gingrich this evening online. He came on Washington Journal and he was talking about Health Care system, and as a typical Republican, he tried to scare the heck out of the American people talking about health care rationing and how folks in London cant get treatment for Lung Cancer. I find his arguments not only false when it comes to health care system, but i am also amazed about how STUPID we are as a country to believe such arguments.
As a student in the health field, we studied the health care system in every country, and Britain has one of the lowest cost for dental medicine, and their citizens due to the access to care, have one of the lowest caries per patient among the developed countries. The system has been highly praised to the point where some of the dental students have a desire to practice in London. One of the things holding us back would be the huge loans that needs to pay back.
Talking of Canada, the Canadian Prime Minister is a conservative and he still supports and abide by the national health care system. Yet, we are being scared by the Republicans about lack of care and how Canadians are jumping across the border to receive care in the US. Why hasnt the Canadians revolt against the system if its not working or why cant the Conservative Prime Minister abort it? Because they know that this system works, thus their manufacturing industries have grown tremendously.
The questions no one is asking the Republicans are why do a lot of Americans travel outside of this country to receive health care when we have the "best" system in the world. Obviously, the care isnt worth the price to these folks. Why do more people die in this country due to lack of insurance than all developed countries combined? Why do we often have the highest diagnosis for late-term cancer which decreases the chances of survival? Why do we make more profits on the health care of Americans than all the developed nations combined?
The Democrats/ Progressives sometimes make me sick, because their argument have been limited to the fact that all developed countries have health care. That's not enough. Its time we start asking questions that Republicans have to answer. We need to start town-hall meetings across the country and fire up the nation to see the truth behind the curtain. Its time we get smart and read up on the issues and statistics, so folks like Newt wont be lying to us on TV or picking and choosing which stats to use. So far, i haven't seen any developed nation revolt about "socialized" medicine, neither have we revolted against social security or medicare. That tells me that the argument is there to be made, but we are too Stupid to defend our position on the same stage as Republicans.
