Indpendent of a court order, VT legislators brought a marriage equality bill to the legislature and passed it in both houses with huge margins.
Great as the decision by the Iowa Supremes was, they don't directly represent the people. The well over 100 legislators who voted for marriage equality in Vermont do. In the Senate, only 1 dem voted against marriage equality and in the House only a few (6 or so) did. And several repubs voted for it.
On Monday the governor will veto the legislation. On Monday afternoon the Senate will override that veto. On Tuesday the House will vote, and whether they'll override is anyone's guess. Two dems who voted against the bill will vote to override because they're annoyed at the gov for vetoing legislation with such overwhelming support. Others are undecided.
Whatever happens on Tuesday, the Vermont legislature deserves a lot of credit for their support for marriage equality. And if the veto holds, the injustice won't be long lived. Douglas will be gone. A dem gov will be elected and this legislation will pass.
