I get royally cheesed off every time I see some person talk about how smokers and fat people should have to pay more for medical care, etc. etc. because their unhealthy lifestyle choices costs more medically. Not only does this take us down the ugly road of just what Big Brother should regulate, it smacks of a certain brand of self-richeousness that never looks inward to one's own shortcomings.
Now it turns out that yes, us smokers do cost more in medical bills, and we will prompty pay you back when you start paying us for all that extra social security etc. that you are racking up as a result of living longer.
Yes folks, we are actually saving you money by puffing away and dying early, whereas you have the unmitigated gall to jog, eat sprouts and live well beyond your allotted time.
Vanderbilt University economist Kip Viscusi studied the net costs of smoking-related spending and savings and found that for every pack of cigarettes smoked, the country reaps a net cost savings of 32 cents.
