Apparently, when Rich Lowry is not fantasizing about Vice-presidential candidates he comes up with bizarre reasoning to justify water boarding.
This morning on Meet the Press Rich weighed in on the Nancy Pelosy controversy. After some of his normal blather he comes up with this essential gem: Because Nancy Pelosy is such a reknowned liberal and champion of human rights, and she did not raise objections after being told about waterboarding, then waterboarding is probably not so bad and exists in a 'murky area' that's not torture.
Can you believe that? That a functioning adult that would use this sort of reasoning? At least be honest and just say 'I don't care what we do to the terrorist scum', I wouldn't agree but at least I would understand. Let's extend Lowrys reasoning actually and see how sound it is:
Since Dick Cheney and Condie Rice were such experts on national security and they chose to ignore the August 6, 2001 memos, then hey! Maybe Osama Bin Laden wasn't such a bad guy after all, maybe he's in a 'murky area' between average joe and terrorist.
Unfortunately, there to balance Lowry's inanity was Eugene Robinson. A great write but a man whose mind seems to shut down when faced with wingnuttery on live tv. Robinson manages to stammer and bluster for a few seconds and ends up basically saying, 'I don't agree'. Sigh...
