Welcome to (a very late) Fitness Monday! This is a space where you can discuss your ventures into getting fit/healthy. We're also here to support you, and give out advice.
I wanted to talk today about getting ready for the MS Challengs Walk on the Cape that my Mom and I do every year. I wrote an earlier diary about how important this walk is to me, you can find it here. Follow me over the fold if you're interested!
So, every year my Mom and I (plus a lot of our family and friends) take a trip down to the Cape to do a 50 mile walk to raise money for multiple sclerosis. We look forward to it every year because it's a huge chance for us to do something great. It means a lot to my Mom who, even though she has MS, is still very healthy and only has a very mild case. I know she loves to be able to do the entire walk (even when some of us on her team haven't been able to make it!) because it shows that she is not going to let this disease defeat her. I think it might be her stubborn Irish personality :O)
But anyway, as the date approaches (September 11-13th) I'm starting to get excited about the walk! That means I get to start training! And start getting my foot used to wearing actual shoes! I wear sandals most of the year, so my feet usually freak out when I first put my sneakers on.
I'm planning on doing a few training walks as the months go on. My Mom and I will usually do a couple of 5 mile walks, and then onto 10 mile walks. The Challenge Walk actually organizes 10 mile walks throughout the year so people get ready for the big one.
I'm always telling people to try and participate in any kind of event like this. You can kill two birds with one stone- raise money for a cause close to your heart and have a reason to get your bum off the couch and go outside! Most of these walks don't care about how much you can do, but about the money and awareness that you raise. A lot of people will only do a portion of the walk. Last year I only did 30 of the 50 miles because (I didn't really train)I got blisters. :O)
Another thing, I've been a vegetarian for almost two years now, and I want to be vegan by my birthday. I've been working towards it all year now, and pretty much almost there. What I'm having a hard time with is going out to eat, and having to deal with people saying, "You don't eat meat?!" and, "How does it feel to have a protein deficiency?" ;rolls eyes;
I don't eat any meat, poultry, or fish. I haven't had eggs in the longest time. I really don't eat much cheese or milk (it's only when I go out to eat that I have a problem...not many restaurants have soy milk.) It's just hard to find foods that don't have milk/eggs cooked into them. Oh, and does anyone know how to make vegan buscuits? ;)
I'm almost there, I just need to put in the extra effort.
So, any suggestions for that would be wonderful!
