I was watching much of the News yesterday and John King. I kept getting the same message coming from the GOP. The message is simple. They want to do all they can to win the Latino votes or increase their percentages. I rarely hear about them cutting into the Black votes even though they have a Black man as the head of the GOP.
The GOP have a plan. Blacks make up 13% of the population and Hispanics would soon make up about 30-40% of the Population, so they want to go after the higher percentage minorities. Thats the first mistake because they are assuming that desires of Hispanics is quite different from Blacks. By giving up on 13% of the population, they are trying to fight for 51% out of 87% instead of 51% out of 100%.
The second mistake is that the GOP is banking on a comeback without acknowledging the changing demographics. The blacks in North Carolina delivered big for Obama. They have made NY, MD, NJ, and most of North East uncompetitive for Republicans. Somehow the GOP have failed to understand the migration of Blacks to places like North Carolina. The increase in the registration among Blacks (not even close to 90% voted) have also made the Blacks a formidable force to recon with.
The fund raising potentials among Blacks athletes, actors, Oprah, and successful black businessmen is another problem facing the GOP. Ignoring the strength of such partnership should be another course for concern. But i doubt anyone in the GOP is considering having a townhall meeting in Baltimore or Brooklyn anytime soon. They keep talking about 1964 and 1976...but there are more Africans and Carribeans in this country than ever before. This election have truly opened the eyes of a lot of these migrants.
The passing of Immigration reform by President Obama will also complicate their plans to rely heavily on Hispanics as the comeback group. Even if the Hispanics choose to listen, they cant be moved. More hispanics identify with Blacks than ever before. They are equally sensitive to racially charged debate on Hannity, Lou Dobbs, Limbaugh as well. This sentiment was acknowledged even when i was campaigning for Obama in the NY primary. Even though we lost Hispanics to Clinton, it was all in the name of solidarity to someone they knew well. The General Election was not even a contest.
I am sure 95% of Blacks voting for Democrats and 60% Hispanics is another statistics that the GOP might have looked into, but i will suggest they take another poll of black and Hispanic youths in order to measure their viability. I have no doubt in my mind that normalizing relations with Cuba, curbing raids on homes and putting immigrants on the part to citizenship are all GOP nightmares. Ignoring Black voters will no doubt help them in the process of extinction.
