The SOA, Society of Actuaries, sent out an email to members containing a link to 25 essays on the health care system in the US. Some were for universal health care, some were for fixing private insurance, complete with GOP talking points. One that jumped out, which seemed to support universal health care was "Visions Of The Future Of Health Care: Scenes From A Trip To Costco." It is a PDF, but I suggest you check it out. The closing paragraph was this:
Many have argued that Americans are not ready for the vi¬sions I have described. It is posited that the United States is a special case in the industrialized world with a completely different culture. For those inclined to that mindset, I’d like to suggest that an efficient, universal health care system is as American as baseball, apple pie and a $1.50 hot dog plus free refills—Costco-style!

Please consider sharing this link with nonactuaries who may be interested parties. For instance, I've already had an enthusiastic response from the chief marketing officer and the vice president of policy and legislative affairs at my company, both of whom were looking forward to reading intelligent responses to the issues of health reform.
So feel free to forward away if you are so inclined. I do not agree with all of the essays, but they are interesting.
