I am fed up with corrupt, greedy, heartless GOP talking heads comparing a government healthcare plan with the inefficiencies and frustrations of other government agencies such as the Post Office and the DMV.
For a start, the Post Office is actually pretty great. You mail an envelope for 44c and it arrives at a destination thousands of miles away the next day. Not bad. Even the DMV is more than adequate. The point is: these things are not supposed to be fun. To hear the GOP, you would think that getting admitted to hospital with a serious condition is a bundle of laughs. It's not. In fact it's worse than having to get your driving license renewed or having to mail your Christmas cards.
Whenever a right-wing lunatic wheels out this hackneyed argument, we should respond by invoking the Fire Department. There is a government run institution which is universally loved and respected. In fact, we can even push these same morons further by asking them if they think competition is so great, why not privatize the Fire Department?
In short we have a winning argument: why is healthcare any different than the fire department?
