Former First Lady Laura Bush - arguably the most popular Republican out there - and her father-in-Law, Former President George H.W. Bush, both praised/defended President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Sonya Sotomayor.
This has got to be demoralizing for real Republicans.
They have the lunatics on the right, like anti-abortion extremist/terrorist Randall Terry (screeching abouthow a vote to confirm Judge Sotomayor is a vote to kill unborn fetuses), Rush Limbaugh (calling Sotomayor "Horrible," "Hack," "Disaster" Nominee Who Should "Fail") and Newt Gingrich (twittering she's a racist from Auschwitz) -- and then you have old-time GOP stalwarts on the other side declaring either their support for, or coming to the defense of, Judge Sotomayor.
Here's Laura Bush (h/t ThinkProgress):
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, former First Lady Laura Bush offered her endorsement of President Obama’s pick of Sonia Sotomayor to sit on the Supreme Court. "I think she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee," Bush said.
Here's George H.W. Bush (h/t Poltical Carnival):
Wonder if Rush is going to start trashing him now? (Video is GHWB jumping out a plane for his 85th birthday)
In a CNN interview, former President George H.W. Bush defended Judge Sonia Sotomayor:
Then there's Randall Terry in all his raving glory (h/t RightWingWatch.org):
During his latest, now seemingly weekly, press conference at the National Press Club, Randall Terry warned Senators John McCain and Sam Brownback that if they vote to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court "the blood of the babies that will die because of her rulings in on your hands," before going on and calling on Catholic Bishops all over the country to stand up and publicly declare that any Catholic Democratic senator who votes to confirm her will be denied communion, saying that any Bishop who does not do so is guilty of "treachery and cowardice":
Rush Limbaugh compares Sotomayor nomination to nominating David Duke (h/t Media Matters):
Rush Limbaugh says his opposition to Sotomayor not because of race or gender, but calls her "an angry woman," "bigot," "racist" (h/t Media Matters):
Rush Limbaugh calls Sotomayor "a reverse racist," appointed by "the greatest living example of a reverse racist" (h/t Media Matters):
And finally, Newt Gingrich:
Originally from ThinkProgress:
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich posted on his Twitter feed today a call for Judge Sonia Sotomayor to withdraw her nomination because she is a "Latina woman racist." As evidence of her supposed racism, Gingrich posted an out-of-context quote from a lecture that Sotomayor gave in 2001 on diversity. Gingrich wrote, "new racism is no better than old racism" and added:

Newt then admits there is "no evidence" in Sotomayor's "court decisions" that she is a "racist"(h/t Media Matters):
This contrast is striking, isn't it? One almost feels bad for the GOP. OK, not really. But isn't this fascinating, if not infuriating to watch?
