I, like many people was extremely angry at the Justice Department's recent brief defending the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and was even more dismayed that it received so little coverage in the mainstream press, until the recent editorial from the New York Times.
I guess I should feel heartened that the Times "gets it" in a way that seems to have evaded so many others, but I still find it very depressing that no one in the Obama administration does. As the Times points out, the DOJ could have used much less noxious arguments even if they felt compelled to defend the current law, but chose not to.
So far, all we've heard from the Administration is the standard "It's DOJ policy to defend existing statutes...blah, blah, blah" but nothing from our Fierce Advocate. Only crickets chirping. That's the response they will be getting from me going forward when I receive one of their emails requesting support, money or anything else. From now on, I'll be supporting change I can believe in.
