The Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri , one of the leaders of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the one-time designated successor to Ayatollah Komeini, has broken his silence about the recent Iranian election results:

Declaring results that no one in their right mind can believe, and despite all the evidence of crafted results, and to counter people protestations, in front of the eyes of the same nation who carried the weight of a revolution and 8 years of war, in front of the eyes of local and foreign reporters, attacked the children of the people with astonishing violence
Given Montazeri's reputation as a reformer and past critic of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , his condemnation can't be considered surprising, but it does lend extra moral force to the opposition. In his full statement, Montazeri describes any government brought to power by electoral fraud as illegitimate and un-Islamic, and warns the police and army that "I was just following orders" is not a valid excuse. Here's hoping that last bit makes some police and soldiers look into their consciences.
