The Iranian gov't has bandwidth up the wazoo! They are purposefully limiting the country's normal bandwidth to a tiny fraction and people are worried about DOS attacks bringing their infrastructure down? Gimme a break!
I'm sick of everyone talking about messing up the entire Iranian internet infrastructure through DOS(denial of service) attacks on select sites! The iranian gov't is doing everything it can to reduce the countries bandwidth and mess with technology all on it's own...the attacks work by sending endless 'requests' to specific state propaganda news and gov't sites, effectively rendering them useless... these DOS attacks have larger benefits that a lot of people are missing:
- Increase the discussion and shine a light on what's going on in Iran through news making.
- Show Iranian people our solidarity with them, something that will help their will and their cause more than we know.
- Allow all outside Iran to feel connected and involved in the situation. This is especially true for ex-pats like myself. I feel engaged - the key to supporting any revolution.
- Drive all online news seekers to alternative sites for news, increasing the diversity of information to them.
- Show the Iranian gov't that people are pissed with them and their propaganda. Add one more layer of annoyance to their decision making process, especially now when Rafsanjani and Khhamenei are in a public dispute with the supreme leader's authority and legitimacy in question.
So stop crying about their infrastructure and take a stand. The Iranian gov't normally allows multitudes times the bandwidth they now allow, proving they have it ready. They have more bloggers per-capita than any country on earth and we're worrying about their bandwidth across some state sites bringing down the entire country's system???
And to counteract the inevitable "it's not moral argument" and the "you wouldn't want them doing this to your democracy" argument, i just have to say this: Wake up! They don't have a democracy, when they do, we'll treat them as such. You can't fight fire with flowers!
You're either part of the problem or part of the solution. Get out of the way if you can't see the entire picture.
