I finally got a response from Mr. Durbin after a series of emails and calls where I've asked him to support a strong, competitive, public option, and asked what steps he is taking to make that a reality for me and his constituents. From this meager missive, I can only interpret the response as a solid NO for the public option.
The key passages is this:
"I believe that the problems facing the U.S. health care system are unlikely to be solved without strong leadership from the federal government, in collaboration with the private market, to develop standards for health insurance."
The bolding is mine. No mention of a public option and instead an indication that his preference is to "collaborate" with for-profit insurers.
Then there is:
"There are a variety of steps under consideration in Congress that may help moderate costs without undermining existing coverage. I support a health care system that allows a choice of private insurers who compete for consumers' business."
Again I've bolded the most interesting issue. Durbin wants Americans to be chained to a for-profit model of access to health care! Mr. Durbin may talk a good game of being a liberal, but, most importantly, when there are tough decisions to be made in support the American people, his choice is clear. He even signed a letter to committee chairs advocating for a public option, but it is clear that he is rapidly backpedaling. I am tired of being lied to!
Call:
Senator Dick Durbin (202) 224-2152
It is unfortunate that he will never be dislodged from his seat as long as he chooses to run.
