According to newly realeased tapes of Oval Office conversations in the Nixon-era, Nixon apparently was against abortion, unless it was for use as a genocidal tool to prevent race-mixing.
As if I needed ANOTHER reason to despise the GOP.
If racist bastards like this filth had their way, President Obama would never exist.
From the NYTimes:
On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down state criminal abortion laws in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.
Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster "permissiveness," and said that "it breaks the family." But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.
"There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white," he told an aide, before adding: "Or a rape.
Full Story Here including additional evidence of his antisemitism.
To all Nixon apologists who have long maintained that his Southern Strategy was just about a path to victory and not about any invidious racist ideology, here is your hero in all of his glory.
As a black person of mixed racial/ethnic background myself but mostly as a human being recognizing the beauty and intrinsic value of all people, I cannot explain how f'in angry that makes me. Someone below suggested that I should expand this into a full diary. I agree that the subject matter deserves this but I am frankly at a loss as this defies "analysis" or reasoning. As soon as I have collected myself, I will try but all I can muster is explitives. Right now, my heart is racing, my ears are hot, and I am also mad at myself for allowing this 30-year old "news" to set me off so much.
I can't wait to see what his disciple-in-hate Pat Buchanan has to say about this! And what MSNBC/NBC does as a result.
No amount of Keith/Rachel/Ed can justify giving that racist blowhard a daily platform!
An Awesome Diary by Ministry of Truth calling out MSNBC/NBC for supporting/promoting Buchanan and a call of action to get him off the air.
Thankfully, we are a different nation today than in the Nixon era. And racist bastards like Nixon (and Buchanan) are in the minority.
