Today's NY Times includes a story of some church in Louisville that had an event urging everyone to bring firearms for the services. They also raffled off a gun. It struck me as funny the first time I heard about it. But when I read it through this morning, it struck me differently.
The funny part was in hearing idiots spout off.
"This country started by people gathering together in churches and complaining about taxation and about their current government, King George III, taking armaments that they had," said Chesley Kemp, 61, a family doctor with his Kimber .45 Auto at his side.
Actually Charles, they usually gathering in pubs. And very few had automatic weapons with them. Exactly zero, I believe.
And the pastor-
"But for a deep-seated belief in God and firearms, this country would not be here today," Mr. Pagano declared from the church’s pulpit.
A belief in firearms? I can prove they exist.
But reading the article in the Times this morning makes me a little nervous of what might happen next.
"There’s a time coming when we may need to protect ourselves from bad things in the world," she said. "We’ve been hearing the rumors about restricting ammunition so that it all expires, so people won’t have the right to protect themselves."
Her husband noted that there could come a day "when we’ll need to protect ourselves in church."
Guns, paranoia and a crowd of people to support the rumor-mongering. A bad, bad combination. We've seen far too many incidents of late involving peoiple who traffic in mis-representing President Obama's intentions. I worry that this event is just fomenting more problems.
