This won't really be much of a diary, but I know it's not getting a lot of coverage in the US and some people are interested so, here goes.
The Parliamentary Labour Party (which is all members of the Labs who are in Parliament) met tonight. This meeting was Gordon Brown's last stand as PM, he had to get the crowd behind him.
It looks as though he has succeeded, despite multiple resignations, a call for a secret ballot on confidence in him as PM, and loads of backroom deals. According to Guardian reporter Andrew Sparrow, who has been live-blogging from outside the meeting (no reporters allowed) Brown managed to save his skin. Insiders have reported that this required some judicious distribution of Cabinet jobs and favours--the complete fallout remains to be seen.
And a fresh challenge could yet be mounted.
One thing is known, which is that Brown will now have to do the will of the Labour Party's Blairite faction. They called the tune on this, and now he'll need to dance. Since this group's policies are even more unpopular than Brown's own, that will be interesting, to say the least.
