July 16. Today. Dkos front page shows that this day marks the anniversary of two major science victories, that couldn't be more diametrically opposed:
Hell:
And so the Nuclear Age began, 64 years ago today.
Heaven:
Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins were aboard the mission named Apollo 11, launched...
Ironically, today was just the beginning for both events. A month later, in August 1945, the US would truly use the weapon it debuted today. And Appolo 11 would only realize it's potential 4 days later, when it landed on the moon, with Armstrong taking "a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind".
Even more noteworthy, both events registered the "top" of their mission. Never again would nuclear weapons be used in war, and never again would mankind walk on the moon.
Makes me wonder...
Science and mankind are capable of such wonders.. and so many horrors.
What are we doing here ? Where are the people who thought going to the moon was worth the millions it cost to get there ?? Would it ever happen today ?
What horrors have we built since sept 11 has gripped half of our nation into madness ? Will they ever be unleashed ?
And where did that society got, that believed man could do anything it put it's mind to it, for good or evil, with no consequences ?
"May you live in interesting times" indeed!
