I kid you not.
Well maybe a little but it is no accident that military initiatives often advance technology. Been true since primitive man looked for a better club.

Consider the solar arena: If you thought the biggest solar array in the Americas was in the Southwestern United States, you'd be right. At 140 acres, the site's 70,000 panels produce peak energy of 14 megawatts, or enough energy to supply 14,000 homes.
But what may not be widely known is that the solar site is at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada
See here.
While PV solar and the geothermal power plant also featured in the link are not state of the art, other initiatives are.
Fox News may have actually performed a service by publicizing DARPA's "flesh-eating robot." While terminally tremulous organic reactionaries trembled at the terror created by the noise machine, DARPA is going full bore ahead on one of the many possible uses of the Cyclone waste heat engine that could be fueled by all manner of things that burn and some that don't (waste heat, solar). Even a new space frontier is being investigated with a fuel that needs no oxygen to burn.
DKos need not be left behind by reactionaries.
It just often seems to want to be for whatever reason. Even the military seems to be weaning itself off nukes. Not so many here.
