I haven’t see this reported on, and granted, Al was only sworn in yesterday, but with GOoPer ambition suddenly inspired by the "courage" of Sarah Palin, I would not be at all surprised if certain Minnesota Republicans were already jockeying for position for a 2014 Senate run. And who better to carry the banner of rescuing America from those rabid ultra-Liberals than the Queen of Wingnuttery herself: Michele Bachmann?
Of course, Norm Coleman may pursue a rematch. That is, if he doesn’t run for Minnesota Governor. Now, I’m not that familiar with Minnesota politics and it’s difficult for me to reconcile the fact that the same constituency that elected the great Paul Wellstone also elected Norm Coleman and Jesse Ventura. The question is, would Michele Bachmann’s popularity extend beyond her own district? It’s always been my impression that Minnesota Republicans (Bachmann and Coleman excepted) are more pragmatic than most of their counterparts in other states. But at a time when GOoPer fortunes are near an all-time low, and the Dems have their hand on the tiller, Bachmann could be the siren’s song that unites Minnesota’s Conservatives. And who would make a more likely target than Al Franken, the un-deserving, election-stealing, Left-Wing, Obama-loving, newest U.S. Senator?
First and foremost, Bachmann would paint Franken as un-American; recycling a theme from last fall. Her Wingnut stances on teaching of intelligent design, and her staunch opposition to scientific findings on climate change, increases in the minimum wage, and the 2010 census would put her at odds with many of Franken’s positions. Bachmann would potentially be a highly-successful fundraiser, drawing on immense contributions from all fifty states, while painting Franken as being to the far left of Barbara Boxer. (She is likely to label Franken as a San Francisco Liberal despite the fact that he was born in New York City and has lived in Minnesota for a long time)
It goes without saying that the debates will be great. And we can count on the fact that Sarah Palin will be pallin’ around with Bachmann on the campaign trail. Two peas in a pod, if you will. I can’t wait.
