If you exchange text messages while driving, you risk being killed in a horrible, fiery, bone-crushing, blood-spattering collision.
The bad news? You might take some innocent, much smarter people with you when you die.
Don’t just take my word for it, read these recent CNN and New York Times articles:
http://www.cnn.com/...
http://www.nytimes.com/...
One-fifth of all drivers admit to doing it, which increases to about half of all drivers in the 16 to 24 age range. How many dead people will it take for this crap to stop? NOTHING is that important. Put DOWN your damn phone widget when you drive.
Some people claim hands-free phones, and even handheld cell phones, are safe to use while driving. These people feel completely in command of their thousand-pound vehicles while simultaneously talking on cell phones and hurtling down the road at a mile-a-minute. This does not change the fact that anybody texting while driving is putting themselves AND perfect strangers in jeopardy. They should not just be issued a citation if caught in the act, they should be charged with attempted manslaughter.
The most infuriating quotes from the articles above:
"I’ll look up and realize there’s a car sitting there and swerve around it."
"I don't particularly think I am that good at texting while driving but I do it anyway, recognizing the risks."
"I put the phone on top of the steering wheel and text with both thumbs."
"I do think it is dangerous, and I consciously try not to do it, but then sometimes there's just a text that can't wait."
"I’m pretty sure that someday it’s going to come back to bite me."
Do you really want to be as dangerous to your fellow citizens as these worthless pieces of excrement?
No?
Good. Then knock it off, people. I’m serious. Somebody who feels strongly about highway safety might see you texting while driving, follow you to your destination, and give you a right ding around the ear for being so stupid.
Assault, you say? No jury would convict me-- I mean, that hypothetical person.
