It isn't so much an anti-reform movement that is gathering steam, as it is raging lunatics finding another fig leaf to cover their racist and nativist sentiment. What I don't understand is why anyone on the Left is energized yet. There is no bill. Everyday we hear about how the public option will be watered down or killed, about how the subsidy levels will be adjusted to provide zero relief to the middle class, etc.... Nothing that I've read to date suggests the reform will be effective, although it will have bipartisany goodness.
Corporations know how to run circles around regulators. The SEC under Bush proved that. The same will happen with healthcare regulation. Correcting market incentives through competition works a hell of a lot better than remedying the incentives through regulation. If there's no public option, there's no point to reform. Given, the history of the (modern) Democratic Party folding before the fight, and the feckless leadership we have in the Senate, why does anyone have ANY hope before there's a FINAL bill with a public option to be voted on?
