I am NOT a good "dieter"... by that I mean that I am not good at eating special foods or cutting all of some foods out of what I eat. I REALLY enjoy food-- REAL food. So... no meal replacement stuff works for me. I spend too much time pining for what I'd rather be having.
Lately, I've discovered something really neat... I can eat pretty much anything I want, if I am willing to eat a "reasonable human" sized portion of it. It's all so unscientific-- and incredibly satisfying... and it's working for me.

I really think that we have in our current society gotten used to insanely LARGE portions being the norm. We definitely want our money's worth when eating at a restaurant, right? But eating two meals worth of food in one sitting just cannot be healthy. I have become a fan of "kid" sized meals-- guess what? They really are plenty of food for your average person to eat in one sitting. I can eat the occasional burger and not feel guilty-- because I had a small burger and a few fries instead of the MONDO burger and a pound of fries.
Bread is another of those foods I love and have a hard time depriving myself of-- so now, I don't. I love GOOD bread, so that helps--I get whole grains this way. I have learned that I don't need to eat the whole pan of cornbread or half the loaf of whole wheat/oatmeal. I can even have a pat of REAL butter on occasion with the bread.
If I want a cookie- I have a cookie (a REAL cookie)... I have been able to do this, because I know that I am not depriving myself of something I like. MY biggest problem with food and dieting until recently was not dealing well with depriving myself-- and so I would "sneak" whatever I was missing... and eat enough of it for two (or three) people.
Now that I have the mindset that any food can be okay if I just have a little of it, I eat better all around. I know that I can eat my fill of veggies and most fruits, I can eat some bread, a little meat, some dairy, and even yummy "forbidden" dessert stuff. Nothing is OFF-limits. Real food works as diet food for me. I guess I am re-teaching my self how to eat-- how to nourish my body with food.
***I am interested in others' thoughts on this... I know several people who swear by meal replacement programs. I'm guessing this is one of those things that is different person to person. After all we aren't all built the same are we? :-)
