I was on vacation last week, out of reach of the intertubes, but I found this story on some feminist websites and was on CNN on August 5th. I didn't see it on DK via search, but forgive me if it is a repeat.
George Sodini, who shot and killed three women in a Pennsylvania gym, had long planned his rampage. He hated women, blamed them for his problems, and went on a kill-spree for vengeance against imagined wrongs. One wrong he imagined was that a 'desirable' women wouldn't go out with him. (Maybe they sensed he was a 'kill-spree' type, hmmm?)
I have two points - gender-bias killings are not given the weight and analysis that they should. Remember the killer in Canada? He killed a lot of women. And apparently the Virginia Tech killer had a similar motivation, if not target. If you put this in the context of domestic violence and sexual assault, this can be seen as a huge problem. Imagine if one ethnic group, White Americans, let's say, was subject to the same rates of violence and assault that all women are in this country, yeah, that would be a story.
Also of note, and buried, was the killer's anti-Obama and racist rantings. Is he just another birther-deather wingnut who hated women also? According to Editor and Publisher, the AP conveniently left that out of their reporting. Maybe this guy should be put on the list of politically- motivated (in part) killers, like Dr.Tiller's. Just another part of an alarming trend of wingnut madness.
