The goal is to attain better health through improved diet and exercise. The reason is different for every individual. Identifying your reason or motivation can be one of the most important tools for reaching your goal. Without a well defined reason most programs will fail.
I found the top 5 reasons why weight loss is temporary
here
- We don’t keep our head in the game.
- We do stupid things to our body.
- We start things that we won’t maintain.
- We get in shape for events, but not for life.
- We don’t have a plan for life beyond the weight-loss.
I am guilty of all 5, how about you?

As the article says:
Maintaining habits, behaviours and weight loss for life is the real challenge.
So we need long term motivation, a reason with an event horizon beyond next year (or your high school reunion or your sisters wedding). My reason may be very different than anyone elses. As individuals we all need to find our reason, the thing that will keep us going in a favorable direction towards lifelong HEALTH.
I have been on a personal journey to find my own reason. My health has declined but that wasn't enough. I have joined weight watchers or dieted before but it never took. I need to determine a viable life long reason to keep me working towards a final goal of achieving and maintaining health.
The reality is I am needed long term on this planet. My 18 year old has down syndrome and is a low functioning member of society. He will most likely never be able to live on his own. His care and happiness is completely dependant on his dad and I. My need for health is to be able to care for him and provide a life worth living for a young man who cannot do it on his own. The other boys are grown and off in college / working and making their own way in society. But the youngest is our life long job. And we need to take care of ourselves so we will be around to make things happen for him.
For me to throw my health away on Ben and Jerry's while I grow into an even larger person is selfish. So excuses, depression, bad days, etc, are going to not only limit my life but also prevent me from keeping promises I have made to our youngest boy. One look in his eyes and I know I need to stop being selfish and do what is right, to take care of myself so we may all have a happy and healthy future together.
oh, and grandkids would be nice someday.

The groundwork of all happiness is health.
