Disclaimer: This Foreign Outsourced Version of Cheers and Jeers has no connection, collusion, incorporation or common affection for the genuine literary creature of the same title as produced by the esteemed M. Inportlandmaine on a quasi-daily basis.
If you should happen upon this wretched yet oddly attractive scribe (doubtless lurking around the free Cuba Libre samples at some swank function in hoity toity Pittsburgh), please inform him that the Kiddy Pool did open for business, that he is missed, and that he owes me $10.00 (Canadian)
That said - welcome to this Kanuckistani/West Coast Friendly/Socialised for your Convenience, Cheers and Jeers.
This manuscript has been cleared by the People's Collective of Censoring Directorate of the Third Secretariat of the Canadian Ministry for Political Correctness and Multiculturaltudism, Sergeant Preston in Charge.
God Bless the Queen, eh?
This being the third Friday in August, it is, as all true Northers know, Union Suit Donning Day.
This is the day set aside when Kanuckistani men (and, these days, not a few women) go out bravely and buy their winter requirements in the usually unmentionables department.
After a local parade, optional beauty contest, and much toasting and frivolity, the Union Suit Men are sewn into their suits in anticipation of the coming winter blow.
Have fun out there young people - and see you all on the third Friday of April for the traditional Cut Off and Bonfire and Bath Day!
Jeers to stupid people.
I have lost my last trace of patience with stupid people.
Because of stupid people, my stepladder comes complete with scads of unnecessary warning stickers, such as "Note: This is not a step." on the fold down ledge where normal people place their paint and beer cans.
Because of stupid people, the showers at the health club have two temperatures - not warm enough, and too damn cold.
Stupid people are too darned stupid to trust with step ladders and water taps, but it is considered rude to tell them that they are that stupid.
Stupid people say things like:
"Life is very important to Americans."
- Bob Dole
"I get to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada."
- Britney Spears
"I don't know whether I'm going to win or not. I think I am. I do know I'm ready for the job. And, if not, that's just the way it goes." -- Des Moines, Iowa, August 21, 2000
You see, stupid people don't plan based on knowledge of consequences... so, to other stupid people, this last sounded folksy, even reasonable. To non-stupid people this sounds ... well. stupid.
If you take into account that the stupid person saying it was running for President, then, to non-stupid people, it sounds calamitous, if you remember that this person squeeked through again in 2004 based on the votes of other stupid people, the quote gives you a frisson of terror and disgust.
50% of people out there are below average. Half of the people out there are dull normal or worse. An even number of people finish in the bottom half of their class as the top half. Stupid people are important though, as my sweet daughter Hanna just pointed out, without stupid people, we wouldn't be able to pick out smart people.
I have great hope that Hanna will turn out to be a smart person. But, you know, being stupid is not the worst you can be. I have worked with stupid people, learned valuable lessons from stupid people, and I even consider myself to be stupid about things with which I have no knowledge or direst experience.
Being stupid and thinking this somehow ennobles you is worse than being stupid.
"The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."
Preying on the fears and credulity of people who have no grasp of the issue is the worst.
I live in Canada. We have single payer Socialized, government controlled full Bogey Man Health care here. Before that was instituted both of my Grandfathers died.
My Refugee grandfather died in pain at home because the painkillers that were available cost money. My French Canadian Grandfather died from work related injuries, and my Great Uncle had to turn screws and pull strings to get his widow a pension. This was in the bad old days before unions and common decency and a prairie Minister changed Canada.
My refugee grandmother died with full hospital care, so did my other grandmother, a member of an established United Empire Loyalist Canadian family
No "death panel". Treatment of their disease and treatment of their pain and work for their peace of mind and comfort continued to the last minute. Neither had to worry about insurance or medical costs or co-pays or pre existing conditions or portability.
From this foreign perspective, the remarks of the ex-Governor of Alaska smack of base motives and craven principles. The fact is that Palin can practically see Canada from her front stoop.
Stupid people really get me mad.
