A little humility may go a long way.
I am not ashamed to say it: the rest of the world seems to understand health care a lot better than us. Perhaps it is time we ask for help. Insights from "Dr. Deb":
Asking for help...
Myth: It makes us look vulnerable.
Truth: Asking for help creates an atmosphere of empowerment. It communicates to others that, while you may not have the answers, you are willing to find them and make things better.
Hey now, that doesn't sound so bad does it?
President Obama, might it be a good time to "empower" ourselves by calling a summit of leaders of countries that have more effective health care than our own?
I know that it is popular to believe that as America, we must LEAD everyone else, and they can follow our "shining city on a hill." But to be a member in a community is a 2-way relationship.
Myth: I am a giver. I don't like when others help me.
Truth: Get over it. With practice, you'll learn to be comfortable when others help you. And before long, you'll come to realize that you deserve a helping hand every now and then.
You hear that Congress? There are precedents set all over the globe for us to look at, people for us to ask questions of, and relationships that can be made even stronger by cooperating on this issue.
Please consider taking the advice of Dr. Deb, and when it comes to American arrogance in the health care debate, GET OVER IT!
