About a month ago I posted a Sunday Morning Jukebox Diary with some videos. A handful of people liked it and asked for more. So here’s some music for a Sunday morning. Today’s theme is bittersweet love songs. I hope you enjoy them.
I Fall To Pieces (Patsy Cline)
"You walk by and I fall to pieces." How does she do that with her voice? A classic song about heartbreak.
Little Sister (Rockpile w/Robert Plant)
"Little sister don’t you do what your big sister done." Elvis Presley did this song and so did Dwight Yoakam. But here’s Robert Plant (the Led Zeppelin guy) singing and Nick Lowe (or is it Dave Edmunds or is it both?) on guitar. Great song.
Creep (The Pretenders)
I know. Radiohead did it first. But Chrissie Hynde does a great acoustic cover.
"I wish I was special. You’re so fucking special. But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here." It reminds me of being an awkward high school kid.
Girlfriend (The Suburbs)
Nobody’s ever heard of The Suburbs. Except me. They were a punk/new-wave band from Minneapolis in the early 1980s. I used to watch them at the Longhorn. Here’s a melodic, almost hypnotic, love song about a girlfriend. The singer sounds a bit like David Bowie.
The American Song (WKUK – Whitest Kids U Know)
"I’m totally gay for the U.S.A." This is a typical country music, rah-rah America, song. But it’s got a twist.
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (The Beatles)
Supposedly, John Lennon wrote this song about the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, who was gay. At that time, in England, being gay was a crime. So "You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away" is about being in the closet.
Also, Paul McCartney said this song was Lennon's attempt at sounding like Bob Dylan.
Incidentally, the Beatles also did a version of the following song.
World Without Love (Peter & Gordon)
Gordon Waller died about a month ago, so here he is, when he was young. This is a black and white TV version (probably lip synched). Very nice harmonies.
