Senator Wyden is one of the uncommitted Democratic senators currently being pressured by The Alliance (OpenLeft.com, Democracy for America and Health Care for America Now) to publicly commit to the public option - in order to bring the count to the required 50.
I just spoke with Senator Wyden's DC and Portland, OR offices. Their good-news responses are below the fold.
I asked if Senator Wyden supports the public option, would refuse to vote for cloture or vote against a bill with a public option.
Both offices said that while Wyden's first choice is his Healthy Americans Act, he will support a national public option if the overall bill is fiscally sound - and that since he is expressing a willingness to support the public option, his plan is not to vote against it or support a filibuster.
While Wyden has yet to make a public statement in support of the public option, today's response marks the first time his office has said he will support a national public option. During previous phone calls, the most they would say is "he's open to anything" or "he seeks a bipartisan solution".
By the way, the Portland office said they are being "overwhelmed". Let's keep the pressure on.
