I don't want to go into too many details. I'm guessing many of you will be able to relate.
I have a 19 yr old who doesn't want to return to his sophomore yr because "he doesn't know what he wants to do".
He's a good kid, has never applied himself, doesn't live up to his potential.
I have started to research service abroad programs and they cost a lot of money. Which I'm not totally opposed to but looking for insight. OR does anyone have any service project they want an able bodied, pleasant 19 yr old for in the US? It may sound crazy but the economy doesn't help. Its an excuse to not look too hard for a job......and my husband and I would like to see him doing something worthwhile for a while.
I just laid it all out in the intro. I really respect Kossack's opinions. I welcome parenting advice if you must but please take it on faith that its a simple case of lack of motivation. My husband and I are trying, probably could be more assertive.....
Hes a smart kid who would be great with kids. He has done a little service work in the past. He's not an angel, he does party a couple nights a week but his group of friends are generally smart, responsible and respectful.
I think a service project would be a fantastic experience and opportunity. I'm a little apprehensive at first glance looking at these slick websites for companies who place you.
It probably goes without saying: my hope is that he goes somewhere (U.S. would be great too), does something worthwhile, gets away from computer games, builds some self worth and work ethic and goes back to school.
