I didn't see Kanye West's meltdown at the VMAs, and I didn't need to. Seeing it all over the blogs this morning, I knew what happened. What I didn't expect was the racism. Have a look at twitter: http://twitter.com/...
Typing in "Kanye and nigger" brings up a LOT of entries. And they're still going.
Here's some:
@amber_berry: Kanye is a backwoods nigger who needs to be lynched by the KKK
TEFLONSOTHICK RT @ODV1985 kanye west is monkey ass nigger! and should be lynched!
ObamaHATER11 @J_CORLEAN kanye proved himself to be a NIGGER and so did u
The last one is interesting because the user is already a self-professed Obama hater (like we didn't already know that there was a lot of racism behind opposition to Obama to begin with).
Other interesting tweets are the ones that cite Chris Rock's bit on "there are black people and there are niggers." Not surprising to see it being referenced but I wonder if Rock regrets having given that ammunition to racists.
I haven't been in the US since May last year, so I missed the election, the inauguration and all that, but it seems like there's a lot of racial tension building up. Will there have to be a confrontation? It's seeming that way. As a black man, that worries me, especially for when I get BACK to America.
I hope I'm wrong, but it seems like the racial tensions between whites and blacks were just a little too-well buried, and Obama's presidency has brought them back to the surface. It may well get a LOT worse before it gets better.
