I've lived in Northern Virginia just over a year after a long residency in D.C., and the past year I've been in McLean represented in Virginia House District 34 by an excellent Democratic Virginia House Delegate, Margi Vanderhye. Margi has been surprisingly effective as a freshman Delegate after first winning her seat in 2007, but is under attack from Beltway Republicans. This Saturday morning, September 19, at 10:00 a.m., you can come help!
Margi is, in fact, the top Democratic target of the Virginia GOP this fall, as discussed in House race discussions (actual discussions linked) in Virginia blogs New Dominion Project and Not Larry Sabato.
Margi is a great Delegate who took this seat from the GOP in 2007 after longtime GOP Delegate Vince Callahan retired. She has managed to keep both liberals and moderates in the district happy.
But the district, while voting strongly Democratic in almost every key race the past several years, still is a swing district that Republicans can win. Pat Herrity beat Sharon Bulova here in the Fairfax County Board Chair special election earlier this year, and Congressman Frank Wolf always carries the 34th in his reelections. And now Barbara Comstock, a longtime hard right Beltway GOP attack dog on the national scene, is looking to start her own elective career at our expense in the 34th.
This Saturday at 10:00 a.m., you can join the effort in making sure Republicans leave this November empty-handed for all the hundreds of thousands of dollars and other efforts they put into defeating Margi. Stop by the coordinated campaign office at 7600 Colshire Drive in west McLean, just off Dolley Madison Blvd. between the Dulles toll road and the Beltway. Margi herself will be there to fire up the troops, and there will be refreshments. Then pick up a canvass packet and ask voters their concerns and how Margi is the best choice to address them.
