It's another "deja vu all over again" night on The Late Late Show...
Warning: Today's post is not for the faint-hearted or the weak. It will be vulgar, contrarian, and dismayingly revealing of a personal failing. You have been given notice.
Question: What's the shortest prayer?
Answer: Shit!
I don't know about the rest of you, but there are only two types of situations where I employ that word; when I'm nearly speechless with rage or frustration, or when I'm speechless in awe and wonder. Both are momentous occasions that can only be marked by uttering one of the most powerful words our language has to offer. (To be fair, I have employed that word as an adjective, too, but again, only when describing an action or thing that's contemptible, which I think still qualifies it as a sort of prayer.)
I can't take credit for the Q & A above. It comes from an Anthony Hopkins interview where he said that he once asked a Jesuit what the shortest prayer was, and the Jesuit told him "Fuck it."
I thought the Jesuit's response was a little too wordy, so I shortened it up some.
As you might have guessed, I have nothing against the practice of swearing. Often it's the best way to get your point across. Swearing will certainly get you attention from God -- or from the people around you. (Whether it's the good kind of attention or the bad kind, either way you'll certainly get it.) Personally, I admire the skillful application of swearing. Not only can it be profoundly expressive of emotion, but also be an admirable illustration of how far a few well-chosen vulgar words can go.
Today I have nothing special to rant about, but I came across this SPECTACULAR rant from an Aussie. It's truly magnificent, and when he finishes, there's nothing more to be said on the subject.
With the Late Late Show in reruns, let's take a look at some vintage clips.
Here Craig does a monologue on aging and the Rolling Stones.
Now, to quote out very own liberalis,
And in closing ...
the Universe can go fuck itself. Seriously, what's the point? How the hell am I supposed to make sense of any of this?
Good luck out there, people.
