If this story on Huffington Post is true ... and as of this moment it's just a book proposal, John Edwards intended to marry his mistress Rielle Hunter after Elizabeth Edwards' death -- which hasn't actually happened yet, thank God -- and he promised her a rooftop wedding in New York City with the Dave Matthews Band playing her wedding chunes for her.
What's even worse for Edwards supporters - of whom I was one, back in the day when we all assumed he was sympathetically sticking by his wife during her terrible bout with cancer while their children were very small -- is the evidence that he used campaign money to pay her off.
If the $14,000-odd that his campaign listed for furniture turns out to be the same money paid to Rielle, supposedly for some videotapes, we could very well see John Edwards in prison.
That would be an interesting twist of fate. I was a big fan of Edwards early in the 2008 campaign. For one thing, he was the only candidate who spoke about poor people. For another, he was the only one who seemed to actually care about the fate of New Orleans.
Apparently the Feds are investigating Edwards for misuse of campaign funds. I just don't know how to feel about it, and wondered what other former (or current) Edwards supporters think.
